Double-Hung Windows

The classic window of older East Bay homes. Both sashes slide up and down, and modern double-hungs tilt in so you can clean the outside glass from inside. The natural choice for Craftsman, Victorian and Colonial houses.

Two Sashes, Both Moving

A double-hung window has two sashes that both slide vertically. Open the bottom one for a breeze at sill height, the top one to let warm air escape near the ceiling, or both for the best airflow of all.

Older double-hungs ran on ropes and weights hidden in the wall. Today’s versions use concealed balances and tilt in for cleaning, which is a real advantage on second-floor windows.

Double-Hung Window FAQ

Straight answers from the people who install them.

On a double-hung, both sashes move. On a single-hung, only the bottom sash moves and the top is fixed. Double-hungs ventilate better and are easier to clean; single-hungs cost less.

We remove the old sashes and balances and insulate the empty weight pockets before the new window goes in, which also stops a hidden draft.
